The Librarian: backgrounds

These are some of the backgrounds for The Librarian. It was really good to just be able to sit down and get some paintings done, made a nice change from doing the quick line drawings of the actual animation.

Life Drawing

Some life drawings from last week the first four are quick gesture drawings taking about 3 minutes each.

First watercolour took about 40 mins, trying to experiment with using more colour in the skin and not using any line working straight into the watercolour

these two took about 40 minutes together, I did the pencil sketch because I really wanted to emphasise the almost skeletal shape of the hip.

2D vs 3D work for Nick

Some short 2d cycles for a 3rd years final project, the first two are meant to be part of a crowd scene of onlookers, the second part of a crowd scene of people laughing.

Animated on ones, Nick wanted the skeleton and guidelines of the drawings to show through so that the images contrast really well with the 3d figures.

Pauline - lipsynch

This is my first attempt at Lipsynch from last semester finally got round to putting it up. Rig is the Moom rig by Ramtin, dialogue was recorded by me

First Year Animation

Just posting a few of my older animations from last year, interesting to see how much I've improved

This was the first piece of animation I did after learning the principles. I think its quite good but there definitely needs to be more variation on the timing, at the minute its a bit monotonous.

Maya cycles

walk, run and action cycles in maya

first 2d walk/run cycles.

2D cut out title sequence

Brief was to create a title sequence for a childrens tv program using cut-out animation in Toon Boom Harmony. The cycles were to test using the symbols and keyframes in Toon Boom.

Maya sequence.

I think the first part of this is quite good but the walk/run definitely needs more work.

One of the exercises I did when I was learning the 12 principles.

First long sequence in maya, using Andy rig from creative crash, I quite like the rise from the chair a the beginning but the run cycle in the end needs so much work.

Life Drawings.

Soome life drawings from last week.

a bit different this time because we had a 'clown day' at uni for comic relief, because of this I chose to use more colour in the sketches. It was a challange to draw using just the colour of the watercolour with no lines to guide me.

close up to better show up the bleed of the watercolour.

The Librarian: Animatic

Here is the animatic for The Librarian.

There will probably be a few tweaks in the the timing with more focus placed on the interaction between the Librarian and the Beast and less on the inside of the library. There will also probably be a title sequence of some sort during the opening fly in as well, but overall this is how the short should go.

The Librarian: colour tests.

Here is the final colour design for the Librarian. It took me quite a while to decide which colours to use as I wanted to test them against the backgrounds of the film to make sure the colour palettes matched. Originally I planned for the character to be much greyer and subdued but it idn't really work well with the backgrounds.

these are the first colour schemes that I did while I was still waiting to finish a few of the backgrounds to test against.

I narrowed down the colour scheme but wanted to tweak a few things. I really liked the idea of the green skin and hair but couldn't quite get it the colours to balance right.

After making the final decisions about the colours I decided to do a quick test on how the lighing in the underground part of the world would affect the colours.

The Librarian: concept art

My main project this semester is to complete a film based around the idea of a small planet and a being that inhabits it. I decided that I wanted the planet to have the ruins of an old culture, with one last inhaitant protecting the books of the great libraries.

Here are some of the early concept designs for the main character. I knew that I wanted her to be quite small and cute looking, with simplified shapes to speed up the animating process.

First few ideas, took me a while to get into my stride.

started to work out the body shape that I wanted

really getting the final sort of idea down here

some quick sketches of ruins concepts.

Eventually I settled on this concept for the main character.

life Drawing

life drawings from a recent session.

quick gesture drawings, I like the ones on the right and at the bottom but I think I still need to do a lot of work emphasising form and making the line of action clearer.
more gesture drawings cooling down t the wnd of the session.

Experimenting with watercolours, about 15 minutes drawing and 15 minutes painting. I quite like how this turned out but I wish I had emphasised the red a little more. I also think that the form looks a little flat, with the details of the figure hidden due to the size of the brushstrokes and the speed I was painting at. I need to work on making sure the form remains clear throughout the painting process.

Detail of the torso.

Movie Reviews: Wreck it Ralph

poster taken from

So I finally got to see Wreck it Ralph (damn you UK release dates!) and I have to say... it was awesome. (It's possible that this review is not going to be entirely balanced...) Seriously though I really loved this film.

I think my favourite part of this film was the relationship between Ralph and Vanellope. I always love it when stories focus on platonic relationships and this was no exception. I thought the parallels between the way the two are treated by their 'co-workers worked really well, and it was great to watch Ralph learn to use his destructive talents for good.

The romance subplot between Felix Jr and Calhoun was absolutely adoraable and I also found their characters individually to be really interesting. It would have been so easy to make Felix into the Jerk 'popular hero' or Calhoun into a one note 'Strong Female Character' and it was great that these two managed to surpass these roles.

The animation was of course fantastic, I especially liked the environment design, the thought that went into these charcters that exist in such differnet worlds but coexist harmoniously as all parts of the same design though I have to admit at first its a little jaring to see Felix next to Calhoun.

One of the fun things about Wreck it Ralph though was all the little gaming injokes. Like the code King Candy uses to get into the network and the way the characters moved as they would in their actual games. (As a sidenote, the funniest parts if the film have to be the oreo guards, and the ptsd space marine)

The only real problem I had with the film was that the side characters motivations for being so mean to Ralph  didn't really seem solid enough? You also have to wonder why it took Ralph so long to try and do something about his situation. I guess some people might also be disappointed with how small a part the licensed characters have? Especially since the marketing emphasised their roles so much?

However they are really, really minor quibbles with a great movie and I would definately see this again.
