Hey I know its been a while. The last few weeks I've been busy working on both my final project for uni this year and on my first paid animation job.

I've been working with Ness on an advert for the Students Union SEED project. I had a great experience and it was great working as part of a team.

the final animation can be found at

I animated the walk cycles at the beginning and also did a small amount of the colouring.

25fps Sting

A promotional sting for the animation department at Staffordshire University, where I-kon dances to some tunes. The third week long project for the short films module. The brief was to collaborate in pairs to animate a short sting.
I collaborated with Vanessa Hill on this project. We worked together during the pre and post production stages. I animated the first half of the clip while Vanessa animated the second. Working on this was interesting because we filmed the dance routine then used photoshop to rotoscope the frames. This was a very different experience to how I usually work.

Thief - Onomatopoeia

A forest spirit invades a camp to steal a drink.
Ono of my week long tasks for the short film module. The brief was to make a 30 second animation featuring a chosen list of six sound effects. I also used this film as a test for one of my ideas for my main project. This film was a challenge to me because I had to animate much quicker than I normally do..
sounds were all taken from freesound. created by
- kyster, spaztastic, adjebor, agaxly, cemegar, cmusounddesign, percyduke, voliveri, q-k.

9 Prepositions

Whew. So I'm finally back but I do have a good excuse for not posting, I've been busy finishing everything for both the three weeks in October and the Summer project, parts of the short film module at Uni. but  I'm finished now so here is the first animation that I completed for this year.
A small creature finds a bubble and decides to play.
completed for the 9 prepositions week long task for the short films module at uni. This little project helped me to get back into the swing of things after the summer break. It was also an interesting exercise in animating straight onto the computer.
frames drawn in Adobe Photoshop then coloured and edited in Toon boom Harmony.

Some older digital paintings that I thought I'd already put up here.

boy meeting fairy. I think I did this in order to practise lighting and composition.

sad clown - drawn for one of my tutors last year, from some photos taken during the clown day, comic relief event.

sketchbook monday

Landscape study, watercolour. I'm trying to do a lot more work from reference. Specifically here I was trying to work on getting the foliage to look right, and while I think this still needs work its a big improvement over previous attempts to draw plants in watercolour.
This came from one of my ideas for my summer brief. I'm trying to work on doing more traditional work and on using more colour.
Sketches of two buildings completed while waiting for trains.

flamingos, owls raven and chimpanzees.

kookaburra, bear and baboon.

tigers and giraffe,

 wallaby and giraffe

otters and tortoise,

kangaroo, tapir and mountain sheep,
I had a great time at the zoo and it was great to meet up with Ness (even if she did put me through the terrifying experience of the chairlift :))

The Kiss

Ok, I know its been a while, I got a bit swept away by the holidays :) should hopefully be posting a bit more now though.

I'm trying to practice more character interaction and actually using something other than the default photoshop brushes, also backgrounds :)

This started out as a quick sketch on the way home from uni, but I really liked how it turned out so I decided to finish it. I'm trying to get back into the flow of doing more complete drawings after spending so long animating.

Road to the Stars

A fake channel 4 documentary about space travel.

This is my final piece for my motion graphics module at Uni this semester.Again I'm pretty happy with this overall though I think the writing could be a bit more legible at times.

The Librarian

The Librarian - An alien librarian investigates a strange noise.

This is the improved version of my final piece for the Tiny Planet brief from Uni this year.  Overall I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, but I think the linework needs improving in some places and the animation overall could be smoother.

Drawn by hand, coloured in photoshop the edited in Toon Boom Harmony and iMovie.

3d Modelling

This is the model that I made for the collaboration brief. I think It looks quite good but mostly it was useful for teaching me all of the things not to do while modelling.

and here it is with the rigging controls.

The Librarian: backgrounds

These are some of the backgrounds for The Librarian. It was really good to just be able to sit down and get some paintings done, made a nice change from doing the quick line drawings of the actual animation.

Life Drawing

Some life drawings from last week the first four are quick gesture drawings taking about 3 minutes each.

First watercolour took about 40 mins, trying to experiment with using more colour in the skin and not using any line working straight into the watercolour

these two took about 40 minutes together, I did the pencil sketch because I really wanted to emphasise the almost skeletal shape of the hip.

2D vs 3D work for Nick

Some short 2d cycles for a 3rd years final project, the first two are meant to be part of a crowd scene of onlookers, the second part of a crowd scene of people laughing.

Animated on ones, Nick wanted the skeleton and guidelines of the drawings to show through so that the images contrast really well with the 3d figures.

Pauline - lipsynch

This is my first attempt at Lipsynch from last semester finally got round to putting it up. Rig is the Moom rig by Ramtin, dialogue was recorded by me

First Year Animation

Just posting a few of my older animations from last year, interesting to see how much I've improved

This was the first piece of animation I did after learning the principles. I think its quite good but there definitely needs to be more variation on the timing, at the minute its a bit monotonous.

Maya cycles

walk, run and action cycles in maya

first 2d walk/run cycles.

2D cut out title sequence

Brief was to create a title sequence for a childrens tv program using cut-out animation in Toon Boom Harmony. The cycles were to test using the symbols and keyframes in Toon Boom.

Maya sequence.

I think the first part of this is quite good but the walk/run definitely needs more work.

One of the exercises I did when I was learning the 12 principles.

First long sequence in maya, using Andy rig from creative crash, I quite like the rise from the chair a the beginning but the run cycle in the end needs so much work.

Life Drawings.

Soome life drawings from last week.

a bit different this time because we had a 'clown day' at uni for comic relief, because of this I chose to use more colour in the sketches. It was a challange to draw using just the colour of the watercolour with no lines to guide me.

close up to better show up the bleed of the watercolour.
